Olive at Home is a third-party service that employs workers on behalf of your household, handling payroll, taxes, benefits, and compliance. The household client retains day-to-day management of the contractor while olive assumes employment responsibility and risk.  As your legal employer of record, you gain protection and confidence that every compliance requirement is handled correctly, reducing the liability of employment.

An employer of record is a third-party provider that is legally responsible for the employment of a contractor working at a specified household.  


Stay compliant without the complexity of setting up a new legal entity/household employer.  As your employer of record partner, olive acts as the local employer on your behalf, taking on all responsibilities of payroll processing, onboarding, compliance, and workforce management.


Our service ensures alignment with IRS payroll tax requirements and state employment laws.


The employer of record assumes responsibility for:

  • Background checks and onboarding (I-9 verification, e-verify, and onboarding paperwork)
  • Processing payroll and paying employees
  • Filing and paying employment-related taxes
  • Administering benefits 
  • Managing workers' compensation claims
  • Managing unemployment claims
  • Supporting regulatory compliance


  • Identify and select the contractor/employee for the position
  • Managerial control of the employee duties and responsibilities
  • Manage employee time and expenses
  • Ensure a safe and compliant work environment 
  • If you pay a household employee such as a nanny, babysitter, caregiver or house manager more than $3,000 a year or $1,000 in a quarter to perform work in your home (or occasionally even out of your home such as in a nanny share), you are a household employer and must obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number and register with the state business licensing service
  • Facilitate onboarding (I-9 verification and paperwork)
  • Administer benefits such as paid time off and sick leave in compliance with federal and state law
  • Register all employees with the state 
  • Process payroll for the W-2 employee (withhold Social Security, Medicare, Paid Family and Medical Leave, income taxes, and make contributions to Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment funds)
  • Quarterly filings to the IRS and State
  • Year-end filings to the Social Security Administration and prepare a Schedule H with the tax returns
